The Copper Canyon in Mexico: an area to be explored! Being almost four times bigger than the Grand Canyon in the United States, the Copper Canyon is truly one of the most beautiful areas of Mexico. On this tour, we will take you to all highlights of this area. We will go several days on board the “Chepe” train and will sleep in the most scenic hotels that you can imagine. We will stay TWO nights in the most beautiful hotel of the Canyon: the Mirador hotel, and combined with visits to Mazatlan, El Fuerte and Cerocahui we designed the best tour in the market. DAY 1 Puerto Vallarta- Mazatlan
We take our own transportation early morning Puerto Vallarta with pick ups at Plaza Romy (our office), Walmart and Bucerias, to Mazatlan. We will arrive in the early afternoon. You have time to have lunch and we will have a City Tour in the late afternoon. One night in Mazatlan. We will stay in the “Zona Dorada” of Mazatlan, where you can have dinner at one of the many restaurants, enjoy the beach and/or have some cocktails.
DAY 2 Mazatlan- El Fuerte
After breakfast, we leave in the morning to the Colonial town of El Fuerte, founded in 1564. This place is very famous, as it is the “birthplace” of Señor Diego de la Vega, better known as “El Zorro”. El Fuerte is the gateway to the Copper Canyon. We will check into the hotel Posada del Hidalgo.
In El Fuerte, one of the “Magic Villages of Mexico”, we will have a walking tour. In this colorful, Colonial town we will show you the government building, the Main Square, and the Fort. After this, you can make reservations for an optional river boat tour over the River Fuerte, where you can see many different species of birds. The hotel is a place itself to explore, all rooms are different and there are several beautiful patios where you can already take many pictures. Relax at the pool and have some of the best food that Mexico offers. At night you can join us for the Happy Hour, where you might run into Zorro.
DAY 3 El Fuerte-Cerocahui
Time to board the train! We will be transferred to the train station after having breakfast at El Fuerte (about 15 minutes). The train will leave around 8.30am.
Around 12:30 pm we will arrive at the Bahuichivo train station, where we will be greeted and transported to the Hotel Mision located in Cerocahui, 40 minutes from the station. After check in, we will get ready for lunch (included). After lunch, different optional activities are available, such as visiting waterfalls, or learning about how wine is made, or (our personal recommendation) visiting a Tarahumara girls school, donations are highly appreciated! Dinner at the hotel, don´t forget to try the house wine. The famous Chepe train will take us on an incredibly scenic ride through tunnels, and over bridges from sea level to 7, 200 feet.
DAY 4 Cerocahui – Barrancas
Right after breakfast, we have our first tour of the day. You will ride a road that will take you up 7,500 feet to the Gallego Lookout Point to appreciate the grandeur of the Urique Canyon, the deepest of all canyons. Bring extra batteries for your camera! After that at 12:20 p.m. you re-board the Copper Canyon Train for another thrilling train ride with beautiful landscapes, amazing views on the way, so have your camera ready. We will arrive to Posada Barrancas train station around 2:30 p.m., and will be transferred to Mirador Hotel (5 min). Check-In & Lunch (included). Later in the afternoon we will have a small hike to the caves where the Tarahumara indigenous people live. Dinner is served in the panoramic restaurant of the hotel. (included). 2 nights in this magnificent hotel!
DAY 5 Tour to Creel
After breakfast it´s time to visit one on the Magic Villages of Mexico: Creel. We leave by bus or Van and see a beautiful scenery on the way. The village isn’t very large so we can easily get to know it on foot. On Creel’s main street we found various crafts stores, many in traditional gabled houses with overhangs in front. Visit the main plaza where you’ll also find the town’s neo-Gothic church.
Getting back on the road we visit to San Ignacio de Arareco, a traditional Tarahumara community. There the San Ignacio (Saint Ignatius) Mission and the strange rocky formations that surround it – known as The Valley of the Mushrooms and the Frogs (El Valle de los Hongos y de las Ranas) – truly stand out. Just 7 kilometers ahead is The Valley of the Monks (El Valle de los Monjes), even more impressive than the others where perfect rock pillars up to 30 meters high stand proud. With a little bit of orientation and help of the guide you can go walking in this peculiar valley and discover other fascinating formations. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included today.
DAY 6 Barrancas – Los Mochis
This morning after breakfast you will take our tour to Balancing Rock, the 3 Canyons Overlook Point and Divisadero, so bring your camera and have it ready!! As an optional tour you can take the cable car, or a zip line through the canyon. The longest zip line in Mexico.
After this tour we will be transfered to the train station and you will enjoy again the beautiful scenery on the way back to El Fuerte. Lunch is on the train today. From El Fuerte we will give you a transfer to Los Mochis, where you will stay one night in either El Fuerte, or the Santa Anita Hotel (dinner and brekfast included). (the choice of hotel depends on the time of flight the following day)
