We head towards the border with Guatemala, to the Ucumacinta River. Today, the Ucumacinta River defines the border between Guatemala and Chiapas, but in antiquity its waters lay between the rival Maya cities of Piedras Negras and Yaxchilán. The two settlements were founded in the first millennium B.C., separated by 40 kilometers of dense jungle and the white rapids of the Ucumacinta. We will take a boat ride on the river to the archaeological site of Yaxchilán. In the afternoon, we will go into the Lacandon rainforest jungle to Bonampak, an ancient Mayan site famous for its colourful murals; it was first discovered in 1946. Second night in Palenque.

On the way to San Cristobal, we will stop at Misol Ha, a spectacular waterfall cascading into a wide pool surrounded by lush jungle vegetation and then Agua Azul, another unique jungle waterfall tumbling into vivid, turquoise pools. Lunch at Agua Azul. First night in San Cristobal.
